If you’re like the rest of the RetroEnt office, there’s a high chance that there are two sides to you. On the one hand, your search history is full of phrases like “adorable puppies dressed as Disney characters,” because who DOESN’T want to see a pug dressed up as Ariel? You can bet your bottom dollar we do. But on the other hand, sometimes we need a bit more “rah” to our fairytale stories. If you’re not quite sure what “rah” means, we’re not too sure what the heck we’re talking about either. We just need a bit more grit, a bit more drama, and a bit more darkness to give the icy side of our hearts what they want. That’s why you need to check out these TV shows like Once Upon A Time for when you’re looking for your own (dark) fairytale.
TV Shows Like Once Upon A Time
Once Upon A Time follows the lives of some of our favorite fairytale creatures as they try and curb the boundaries between the human world and the magical realms. As the two worlds merge together, the most infamous heroes and villains once again battle it out in an epic showdown. With an awesome storyline and even awesomer characters (yep, we can make up words when talking about fairy tales), this show really does have everything. But if you’re just as sad as we are that it’s over, check out these shows like Once Upon A Time.
Grimm (2011 – 2017)
If you’re up to date on your fairytale knowledge, you’ll know that a lot of the tales we know and love today have come from two geezers known as the Brothers Grimm. As you can probably tell, that’s where this 2011 TV show gets its name. As Nick Burkhardt discovers he is a distant relative of the Grimm family, it falls onto his shoulders to protect the barrier between the mortal world and the Wesen world. Of course, when mythical creatures wanna see what the mortal world has to offer, they’re not going to go away without putting up a fight…
Emerald City (2017 – 2017)
If you love Once Upon A Time, you’ll love Emerald City. If not, you get a full refund, and we’ll send you a personal apology (DISCLAIMER: We won’t). Okay, this show may have been canceled after one season, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still binge watch it, and then binge watch it again when you’re done. After getting caught in a tornado and landing up in the Land of Oz, Dorothy tries to make her way in this new and magical land. But what she doesn’t realize is that she’s got a lot resting on her shoulders, because she has no idea that she’s going to fulfill a prophecy and change the lives of Munchkins across the land.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018 – Present Day)
Although we loved the OG Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the new Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has got us all hooked. Seriously, if you haven’t watched it yet, you need to cancel all of your plans and binge season one right now. With all of our favorite characters (yuh-huh, Salem does make an appearance), plus a few added extras thrown into the cauldron for good measure, this is a modern story of a witch who has to choose between the human world and her magical talents. But being a half-witch in the magical world and being a half-human in the mortal world causes her a few problems. And you think you’ve got it tough.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997 – 2003)
Oh, Buffy you so fine, you so fine you blow our minds. Oh, Buffy! This nostalgic ‘90s show gave us life back in the day. Of course, it didn’t really give life to the vampires, werewolves, and demons that Buffy was battling on a daily basis, but what else is a teenage girl supposed to do? Her homework? Go to the mall? Watch a movie? Buffy would much rather spend her days protecting the human race from gruesome ghouls who want to raise havoc around her. If you love Once Upon A Time, you’ll love Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Prepare yourself for a bit more of the red stuff, though.
Once Upon A Time In Wonderland (2013 – 2014)
You didn’t think we could talk about TV shows like Once Upon A Time and not talk about the spinoff, did you? This is not our first rodeo. Once Upon A Time In Wonderland was created as a secondary storyline to the original show, and continued to center around the trapped characters of Storybrooke. However, this show had a bigger focus on everyone’s favorite Mad Hatter, White Rabbit, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, and the rest of the Wonderland crew. Sure, it may have only been on for one season, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t pretty darn amazeballs. Give it a go.
There’s no doubt about the fact that Once Upon A Time has stolen our hearts, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t got room a little somethin’ somethin’ else. But if you still want to stick with the magical/otherworldly vibe, then these TV shows like Once Upon A Time will definitely float your pirate ship. Hopefully with Hook onboard.
