Back in 1991, a show was released that saw us rolling on the floor laughing for eight years. Home Improvement. Tim Allen playing the role of Tim ‘The Tool Man’ Taylor saw his acting career skyrocket. The show followed the lives of the Taylors, mainly dad, Tim, who ran his own home improvement (get it?) show with his friend, plaid-loving Al Borland. With the 20 year anniversary of the show quickly approaching, we thought we’d take a look at some of these shows like Home Improvement that we can help bring the magic back to life.
Best TV Shows Like Home Improvement
If you’re looking for shows like Home Improvement then you’ve come to the right place! Here expect to see a number of sitcoms that leave us overcome with true ‘90s feels. From plaid shirts to outrageous hairdos, expect the lot as we take a trip back in time.
8 Simple Rules (2002 – 2005)
A show following a moderately dysfunctional family with a hilarious father figure, sound familiar? Like Home Improvement, 8 Simple Rules focuses on the Hennessy family as they raise their three children, but not without the struggles of family life. While the series only lasted three seasons, the comedy that ensues from the show is enough to make it last a lifetime. Similar to Home Improvement, father, Paul, often helps his children through the struggles of life by offering information, much as Tim does with his three boys.
Boy Meets World (1993 – 2000)
Growing up watching shows like Home Improvement, it was hard not to see an episode or two of Boy Meets World. The show focused on Cory Matthews as he moved from middle school to high school, to college. Just like Home Improvement, this show made Ben Savage’s career what it has become. Boy Meets World offers the perfect insight into the life of a teenager in the ‘90s who has all the struggles of life to deal with while making his way through school. With plenty of laughs, this is a classic not to be missed.
Family Matters (1989 – 1998)
Just as the Taylors have Wilson in Home Improvement, Family Matters has neighbor Steve Urkel. The show follows the lives of the Winslow family, but Steve makes several appearances as the quotable, and loveable neighbor who quickly becomes the real star of the show. However, unlike Home Improvement, father of the show, Carl Winslow, didn’t take kindly to his neighbor’s regular appearances, which he made apparent with his constant witty quips towards Steve.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990 – 1996)
It was all about the ‘90s fashion in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as we watched Will Smith and the Banks family. With shows like Home Improvement, having brilliant family dynamics is a key feature, so seeing Will slot into the lives of his uncle and aunt, and their children gives us plenty of family drama. Every member of the family has their own unique quirks, but they all slot together and know that nothing means more than family. Plus, rather than Wilson dishing out advice, we have the miserable butler Geoffrey to serve up his opinion.
Dinosaurs (1991 – 1994)
Watching a show about a family of dinosaurs – what more could you ask for? This show like Home Improvement followed the hilarious family shenanigans of the Sinclairs. If you’re searching for your fix of plaid shirts then look no further as their father, Earl Sinclair, will fill in that role perfectly from Al. Earl works at a local company where his job is to push over trees – oh to simpler times, eh? Like Home Improvement we have a recognizable catchphrase, but rather than grunting and joining in with the chorus to shout “more power”, we are treated to the famous line of “honey, I’m home”.
When it comes to ‘90s nostalgia, it’s hard not to try and run back to the decade we all know and love. However, after watching all episodes of the show in an attempt to bring those times back, these TV shows like Home Improvement give us plenty of new entertainment to help us relive the ‘90s in the best way possible.
