Curb Your Enthusiasm has got to be, without a doubt, one of the best shows on TV. I would rank it in my top 5 favorite comedy shows of all time, and the latest season shows that the show is back on form. Larry David is one of the greatest comedians of all time, and the genius of Curb is the cringe-worthy comedy, as Larry (playing an exaggerated version of himself) sows the seeds of his eventual downfall by encountering and offending all manner of people. In the age of outrage, there has never been a better or more appropriate time for this show. And, if you’re already finished with the newest season, here are some TV shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm to tide you over.

TV Shows Like Curb Your Enthusiasm

The focus here will generally be on cringe-worthy humor, as well as the mundanities of modern Americana. Shows of a similar ilk to Curb often mine humor from idiosyncrasies, as well as neurosis, and those with delicate sensibilities. There are plenty of shows out there that have taken influence and inspiration from the show – and these are some of the best shows similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Seinfeld (1989-1998)

TV Shows Like Curb Your Enthusiasm - Seinfeld

Seinfeld has to go first on the list for the simple reason that its genius spills from the same pen. Seinfeld was the original show that Larry David created, and it became an American icon. The same cringe-inducing humor is there, as are the observations of dreary, monotonous, and everyday things that generate humor. Seinfeld is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, and the cast even makes regular appearances in Curb Your Enthusiasm. If you’re looking for a show to fill the Larry David sized hole in your life, this is it. I can guarantee that if you love Curb Your Enthusiasm, you will adore Seinfeld and everything it represents.

Extras (2005-2007)

TV Shows Like Curb Your Enthusiasm - Extras

You might be expecting Ricky Gervais’ debut show The Office to find its way onto this list. And it does share the same cringe-worthy, toe-curling humor as Curb, but I feel Extras is a little more apt. Because of the celebrity appearances in both shows, with stars playing exaggerated versions of themselves, the awkwardness just rises to unprecedented levels. With a different guest appearance in each episode, Extras has plenty of the celeb effect to go around. Gervais also cites David as one of his big influences, so it’s no surprise the shows share similarities and deserves its place on the list of TV shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Eastbound and Down (2009-2013)

Vulgar, obnoxious, and utterly hilarious, Kenny Powers is one of comedy’s finest creations, and the rest of the cast of this HBO show aren’t bad either. Shamed former baseball star Powers is the ultimate ugly American. He alienates and annoys everyone he meets, much like Larry – though Larry’s faux pas are almost always more excusable. There’s a belligerence about Powers that mirrors the stubborn and inner fury Larry displays, and both shows focus a lot on social faux pas, and their fall out. Eastbound and Down is a show similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm in a lot of ways, even if its lead is less likable.

Silicon Valley (2014-Present)

A comedy that sticks itself firmly in the socially awkward category that mirrors Curb Your Enthusiasm so well. If you’re looking for TV shows similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm that are more modern, this is a good choice. Created by Mike Judge, of Beavis and Butthead fame, Silicon Valley masterfully picks apart pop culture neuroses and focuses on the continuing presence of technology. It is different from Curb in a lot of ways, but it also shares plenty of similarities, and there are a lot of scenes that will see you hiding behind a pillow.

Louie (2010-Present)

TV Shows Like Curb Your Enthusiasm - Louie

Another comedian playing an exaggerated version of himself, comedy genius Louis C.K. fronts his own show here, and it’s every bit as glorious as Curb. The series follows a divorced dad trying to navigate everyday life but getting into all kinds of situations in the process. While it might not be quite as hysterical as Curb, this is a very funny show, surreal, angst-ridden, and rather poignant in parts. It’s a show like Curb Your Enthusiasm in all the right ways, but it also manages to be its own show in the process.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is rightly seen as one of the finest comedies of all time. It’s combination of boo-boos on Larry’s part, and the easily offended Californian’s he crosses paths with always makes for hysterical viewing. In an era where everyone is offended by everything, we’ve never needed this show more. And I hope you dig the TV shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm that I’ve listed for you above.
