Buffy the Vampire Slayer was resurrected from the ashes of a failed movie to become a cult flagship show for the WB in 1997. With the twentieth anniversary of our demon slaying, fashion icon slayer having recently passed, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to honor this fantastic show, by looking at the other shows out there that are similar to it. We Buffy fans have been having withdrawal symptoms since the slayer fly-kicked her way off our screens in 2003, so here are some other TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer to sink your teeth into.
TV Shows Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Those seeking TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer are going to be looking for something action-packed, with a definite lean toward the supernatural. There will usually be a female lead kicking some serious butt, romantic overtones, and, of course, bloodsucking creatures of the night too, if possible! Check out these shows to help sate your Buffy bloodlust!
The spinoff to Buffy followed everyone’s favorite vampire with a soul and his continuing journey toward redemption. After setting up a private detective firm in LA, Angel is joined by allies old and new as he fights the supernatural forces of the city, along with his own demonic nature. In many ways this is a superior show to Buffy – it’s darker, more violent, and more grown up. While Buffy was all about transitioning from youth to adulthood, Angel chooses to focus on the choices people make, and how they live with the consequences of their actions. If you want an ideal TV show similar to Buffy, look no further than Angel.
The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017)
Developed by Kevin Williamson of Dawson’s Creek fame, The Vampire Diaries follows high school girl Elena Gilbert, in the fictional town of Mystic Falls. Elena’s life is turned upside down when she meets and falls in love with vampire Stefan Salvatore, and his bad-boy brother Damon. The Vampire Diaries is the perfect show for those seeking a TV show like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It has a rich, sprawling mythology, wonderful character development, and some hunky vampires (here’s looking at you Damon)! The show focuses on the trials of teenage years, juxtaposed with the supernatural forces at work in the town.
Charmed was one of the many shows that owe its very existence to Buffy. After Joss Whedon proved that vampires and witches could be cool, we had a slew of shows trying to follow suit, and I feel Charmed was one of the most successful at achieving this. With a great cast of all-female leads and a comprehensive exploration of the mythology of witchcraft and its use in battling the forces of darkness, Charmed was a wonderfully fun and engaging show for its 8 season run.
This is another wildly successful show that owes a big debt to Buffy. Following the adventures of two brothers turned demon hunters, as they battle supernatural forces, and try to find the truth behind their mother’s death. Supernatural is a dark, epic, study of the world of the supernatural, and the themes of family and betrayal. If you want a TV series that’s like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this is one of the best choices, and the show is officially the longest-running live-action fantasy TV series in American history.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer might be my all-time favorite TV show and revisiting it each year is something I look forward to.
