We have to be honest; we’re a little bit obsessed with Netflix. With their Netflix Original Series and their inclusion of popular (and retro) movies and TV shows – there isn’t much need to watch live TV anymore. But so far, Netflix have only bought the rights and licenses to shows and movies that they stream… until now. For the first time ever, Netflix has acquired their first company. And it’s a good’un.
It’s now been confirmed that Netflix has bought the comic-book publishing company, Millarworld. Founded by Mark Millar, Millarworld has brought some of our favorite movies, stories, and characters to life, including Kick-Ass, Old Man Logan, and Kingsman: The Secret Service. Although we’re unsure how much Netflix has paid to acquire Millarworld (we’re assuming it’s pretty pricey), they streaming mega giants have reported that they will develop their own franchise based on the characters within Millarworld, through the form of films, kids TV shows, and TV series. But this doesn’t mean this will be the end of Millarworld, as Mark and his team will continue to create new stories for their characters – just under the Netflix name.
Although this is pretty exciting for Millarworld fans, it’s also an important time for Netflix – who now seem to be making the move to develop their own intellectual property, rather than simply buy the rights. In short, this means the service is just going to get bigger, and better! Ted Sarandos, the chief content officer at Netflix, has announced the deal.
As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern-day Stan Lee.
This new development also marks a poignant place in history, as Millar himself has stated.
This is only the third time in history a major comic book company has been purchased at this level.
Of course, he is referring to Warner Bros. buying DC comic back in 1968, and Disney buying Marvel in 2009. So you could say they’ll be rolling with the big boys now. Millar continues,
I’m so in love with what Netflix is doing and excited by their plans. Netflix is the future, and Millarworld couldn’t have a better home.
Ahhh, we can’t wait to see what Netflix and Millarworld bring to the table!
