We all know Matt Groening is the absolute God of animated TV shows, with both The Simpsons and Futurama being staples as kids (and adults too). However, we’ve always wished our hero would do something just for the adults, instead of picking out the innuendos and grown-up jokes in shows meant for youngsters. Now it seems as though our dreams are coming true, as Groening teams up with Netflix a whole new series.
Disenchantment is an adult-fantasy animated series, commissioned for an initial 20 episodes by Netflix. Set in the medieval kingdom, Dreamland, Matt Groening has said the show will be about “life and death” and “how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks will tell you.” Sounds right up our street then! The main cast has already been pretty much set in stone, with Princess Bean, a serial boozer, played by Broad City comedian Abbi Jacobson. Her elf friend, aptly named Elfo, will be voiced by Nat Faxon, and “personal demon” Luci played by comedian Eric Andre.
Alongside the headliners will be a supporting cast of epic proportions, as various voice over veterans from both The Simpsons and Futurama also getting involved. Expect appearances from Billy West, John DiMaggio, Tress MacNeille, David Herman and Maurice LaMarche. You may also recognize the voices of Noel Fielding, Jenny Batten, Lucy Montgomery, Matt Berry and Rich Fulcher in the show.
According to reports, Matt Groening has been talking to Netflix about Disenchantment since last year, but now the ball is really rolling. The first 10 episodes could be released as early as next year, meaning Groening is going to be a busy boy; with Season 29 of The Simpsons returning this Fall. We’re looking forward to being enchanted by Disenchantment!
