Okay, we need to get something off our chests… we LOVE J.R.R. Tolkien. Yep, give us a tour around Middle Earth any day, let us learn the ways of the Hobbits, and let us defeat dragons on the regular because we are SO down for being a character in his books and movies. Of course, our chances of being an Elf or finding one ring to rule them all are pretty slim nowadays, but we can still get pretty excited about the movie trilogy, as well as the Hobbit spin-off – and the brand new TV adaptation that will soon be coming to our screens!
Yuh-huh, you heard that right, ladies and gentlebeans, because Lord of the Rings is coming to a TV set near you… if you have Amazon Video, of course. While the new TV show was officially announced in November 2017, the streaming service only had this to say:
The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen. We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.
Confused as we are? With little information within this press release, we decided to wait to see whether they would let slip any new information about the show. Thankfully, we now have a few snippets of LOTR gossip to tell you all – and one of them will NOT make you happy.
It’s believed that this new Lord of the Rings TV show will take place before Frodo and the gang got up to all kinds of mischief in the original movie, and maybe even before Bilbo messed things up in The Hobbit… although no timeline or storyline has yet to be announced. However, one thing we do know is that our favorite Gollum/Smeagol will not be making a reappearance – at least, not with Andy Serkis behind him. When asked about the new TV show, Serkis stated that,
I don’t think they would [get me]. I think it’s a completely fresh, new approach to it all, so I don’t think I’d imagine myself to be anywhere near it really.
Well, that’s just crushed our dreams.
