In June, we reported that Foo Fighters’ new album would feature the “Biggest popstar in the world,” but as the cheeky devil that he is, Dave Grohl wouldn’t give us much more info than that. So, that means for the past two months we’ve been racking our brains wondering who the heck this could be. And it seems we weren’t the only ones doing this, with fans around the world coming to the same consensus that the ‘biggest popstar’ would be Adele. Unfortunately, we’re no closer to knowing who this pop star is, but the band has confirmed another new recruit – Beatles legend, Paul McCartney.
Foo Fighters have confirmed that Paul McCartney joined the band to play the drums on one of their new songs, which will feature on their upcoming album, Concrete and Gold. The band spoke to ET Canada about the collaboration, calling McCartney ‘the most wonderful guy in the world.’
He hadn’t even heard of the song. He comes in and Dave picked up an acoustic and showed him real quick. He sat on his special drum set that his tech set up for him. I sat there with a drumstick conducting. He did two takes.
This isn’t the first time McCartney has worked with the band, though. In 2013, McCartney joined forces with the Foo Fighters frontman, as well as the two other surviving members of Nirvana (Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic) to record ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ which appeared in Dave Grohl’s movie, Sound City.
Despite the fact that McCartney’s appearance on Foo Fighters new album is pretty darn awesome, it doesn’t get us any closer to figuring out who the ‘biggest pop star in the world’ is. But Grohl was quick to clarify that McCartney wasn’t the person they were talking about. In June, Grohl spoke to BBC Radio 1 about the guest.
[He or she] sings backup on one of the heaviest songs on the record. And we’re not telling anybody who it is.
Since the news broke, Grohl has denied the rumors that Adele or Taylor Swift will appear on their album and hinted that he’d even approached them to appear in his TV series, Sonic Highways.
I’d be amazed if anyone can really figure it out. But it was great and this person’s been around a long time. And I think I’ve met this person maybe a few times, but I’d never spent time with this person, and we had a blast together. Really…fun. And [he or she is] very talented – more so than I ever knew. But, of course, I…ran my mouth off; now I have to answer to it every time I pick up the telephone.
Hmmm, who could it be?!
