Marilyn Manson has been the cause of many controversies throughout his career. There’s the rumor that he removed a few of his ribs to do *naughty* things, there’s his controversial stage presence and lyrics, there’s his recent celebrity beef with Justin Bieber (which we’re absolutely loving, BTW) and of course, there’s his association with the devastating Columbine Shooting in 1999.
The Columbine Massacre has gone down in history as one of the most brutal school shootings in American history, which was initiated by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Subsequently, the teenagers murdered 13 people. After the attack, it became common knowledge that the attackers had a love for all things metal, and particularly enjoyed the music of Marilyn Manson. As this news became public, more and more people believed their motivation to kill was influenced by Manson and his satanic songs.
However, Marilyn Manson has now denied these claims, and maintains that the assumptions nearly destroyed his whole career.
Give them the money and let them make their own choice: guns or records. If [Klebold and Harris] had just bought my records, they could be better off. Certain people blame me for the shootings at schools – I think numbers are low, and hopefully they go up on [my upcoming] record. But honestly, the Columbine era destroyed my entire career at the time.
Although Manson agrees that his music may have caused people to hate him, he also believed that he ‘was the face to attach to it at the time…I think I’ve been blamed for about 36 school shootings.’
With new music coming out soon, Manson wants the world to realize that he writes his music to contradict these horrors in the world. However, the interview in which this conversation took place may have scuppered those plans…
On September 21, Alexis Petridis from the Guardian interviewed Manson to hear his take on the shootings, and to hear about his new music. However, instead of welcoming the journalist into his Berlin hotel room, Marilyn Manson jumped out from behind the door and pointed a fake gun to his head. As he was trying to remain professional, Alexis let the (rather frightening) incident slide, and carried on with the interview – until Manson leaned over mid-question and flicked Alexis in the…er…’private’ area. Yep, a flick to the ‘nads.
Naturally, Alexis was completely taken aback by this motion, and didn’t really know what to do (we don’t blame him). But of course, this is Manson we’re talking about, so the oddities don’t end there. At the end of the interview, Manson asks Petridis for good press, before whispering ‘Or I’ll find out where you f***ing live.’
I mean, you’re not really helping yourself, Manson.
