Will Smith Is In Line to Play Genie in Disney’s Live-Action Remake of Aladdin

We can’t think of anyone better

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last few months, you’ll know that Disney is making all of our ‘90s dreams come true and remaking our favorite Disney animations into live-action movies. Last year saw the release of the live-action Jungle Book, and just last month we saw the release of the new Beauty and the Beast starring a true Belle of the Ball, Emma Watson. And it seems that the Walt Disney Company has got their hands full with a host of other remakes in the works – including Mulan (excited), The Lion King (even more excited) and Dumbo (even more excited than excited). But even better than that is the Aladdin remake that has just cast its first actor – and he’s a good’un.

When you think of the Genie, you (of course) think of the late Robin Williams. Williams absolutely nailed the role of the blue, shapeshifting, wish-granting Genie in the 1992 classic, and it’s hard to think of another actor who could fit the bill and walk in William’s’ footsteps. But the new director of the remake, the acclaimed English filmmaker, Guy Ritchie, seems to have got it just right – and has asked Will Smith to play the role. At the moment, the Hollywood Reporter has only reported that Smith is in ‘early talks’ with Ritchie to star in the movie. But come on, who could turn that role down?

What makes us even more excited is the fact that Smith’s calendar has recently got pretty empty, after he bowed out of the chance to appear in Tim Burton’s live-action remake of Disney’s Dumbo. So we reckon there’s a good chance he’ll take it…

Filming from the new movie is set to begin this Summer in the UK, with a release date of sometime in 2019. And with this new development, we’re even more excited than we were when we were super excited about it being made….

So far, there’s no word on who will play Jasmine or Aladdin, but we have faith in Richie to give us some shining, shimmering, splendid actors and actresses.
