Let’s be honest; Mary Poppins is the bomb diggity. She taught us that just a spoonful of sugar sure does help the medicine go down (it does, y’know). She taught us that the sound of super-cali-fragil-istic-expi-ali-docious may sound a little atrocious and that if you say it loud enough, you might sound a little precocious – but it’s all good. It works. Basically, Mary Poppins was the kind of nanny we all wish we had had, and even though Hermione Granger used her extension charm for her purse (#nerdalert), Mary Poppins got there first, because she’s just so darn great. Luckily, we have a surprise in store for Mary Poppins fans…
If you were reading RetroEnt a whopping 9 months ago (which you totally should have been because we’re the best) you would have read the news that Emily Blunt would be taking on the leading role as Mary Poppins – alongside the likes of Hamilton legend, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Mamma Mia legend, Meryl Streep, the Beauty and the Beast legend, Angela Lansbury and the Bridget Jones’ Diary legend, Colin Firth. In short, it’s gonna be a whole darn basket of legends. As if that wasn’t cool enough, this news also confirmed that THE Dick Van Dyke (i.e., OG chimney sweeper) would also make a guest appearance in the movie. Does it get much better than that?
Well, it seems as though it does – because we now have the Mary Poppins Returns trailer, and although it doesn’t give much away (okay, it doesn’t really give anything away, like, at all) it has made us pretty darn excited. As we already know, Mary Poppins Returns will follow on from the original 1964 movie and take place 20 years after the original events. Featuring grown-up Jane and Michael, Mary Poppins will return to London during the Great Depression to help out the no-longer-children following a tragic loss within their family. While we’re not entirely sure where this story will go, you can guarantee that with a cast like that, it will be a good’un. Check out the teaser trailer here:
Mary Poppins Returns will be released in the UK on December 21, and will be released in the US on 25 December 2018. We know what we’ll be asking for Christmas!
