Even if you’re not a fan of figure skating, it’s pretty likely that you’ve heard of Tonya Harding. The infamous figure skater rose to fame in the late ‘80s and ‘90s for her incredible talent on the ice, but she also made a name for herself for her personal affairs and her difficult past. The new biopic will follow her early years, her professional career, and THAT incident with Nancy Kerrigan – and the disgraced skater will be played by none other than the incredible Margot Robbie; which makes us pretty darn happy.
A new teaser trailer for the biopic has now been released, and starts with an intriguing monologue from Margot.
America. They want someone to love, and they want someone to hate. And the haters always say ‘Tonya, tell the truth.’ There’s no such thing as truth.
The I, Tonya biopic has been written by Steven Rogers and directed by Craig Gillespie, and will largely follow the scandals and secrets of her life. The movie will show her rise to fame, and the horrific attack on her competitor, Nancy Kerrigan – an attack she was part of. To spur on her chances of winning the upcoming Winter Olympics, Tonya’s husband hired a man to break her competitors legs. Thankfully, the job did not go as planned, and Nancy was simply left with bruising. However, the couple were soon discovered as the brains behind the attack, and Tonya’s husband was jailed. Tonya narrowly escaped jail time, but received a backlash of negative comments from fans and sports officials. We can’t wait to see how this infamous event is transformed into a cinematic masterpiece!
Already, critics are getting their notebooks at the ready for the release of I, Tonya – and are already expecting Margot Robbie to produce a stellar performance, just like she has previously in the likes of Suicide Squad, The Wolf of Wall Street and Goodbye Christopher Robin.
I, Tonya is due to be released in February 2018.
