Not too long ago we reported on the earth-shattering news that there would be a Top Gun sequel – I know right?! Now, further details have emerged about Top Gun 2, including release date and director.
While we may be super stoked that there is a Top Gun sequel on the way, it’s not all good news. The bad news is that we’re going to have to wait quite some time before it hits cinema screens, as the release date is not until July 12, 2019. That’s like two whole years away! And a whopping 33-years after the original was made.
Top Gun: Maverick, as the sequel has been titled, has also secured a rather impressive director. Joseph Kosinski will be taking the helm as director of this exciting project, and it’s not the first time he’s worked with Tom Cruise. Kosinski worked with Cruise back in 2013 on the movie Oblivion. He’s also best known for the stunning Tron: Legacy, the sequel of which he’s also working on. That’s quite an impressive directing history.
The story for the Top Gun sequel has been written by Peter Craig (known for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2 screenplays), Ashley Miller (Thor and X-Men: First Class writer), Zack Stentz (also worked on Thor and X-Men: First Class) and Justin Marks (The Jungle Book 2016 writer). That’s one heck of a writing team! The story is thought to follow a now-retired Maverick, working as a flight instructor. His mission? Teach those overconfident pilots a thing or too! There’s no word yet as to whether Val Kilmer will be reprising the role of Iceman, but we’re keeping everything crossed.
We may have quite a bit of time to hold out for the new Top Gun sequel, but by the sounds of the crew already it’s going to be worth the wait!
