When it comes to making movies, Guillermo del Toro definitely knows what he’s talking about. The legendary storyteller has brought epics such as Pan’s Labyrinth, The Devil’s Backbone and Hellboy into our lives, so we always knew his new movie would be a hit. Nevertheless, we didn’t realize how much the film would blow up BEFORE it had even been released! Yep, critics are going wild, fans are going wild, and we all want to know more about The Shape of Water. Luckily, we’re feeling pretty generous today (don’t get used to it), and have procured everything you could possibly need to know about this stunning Guillermo del Toro movie. You’re so welcome…
What’s The Shape of Water all about?
In true Guillermo del Toro style, The Shape of Water isn’t your typical romance. Instead, this film is a fairytale-esque story that takes place against the backdrop of the Cold War era. The plot follows the lonely life of Elisa, a mute woman whose life has been shrouded in isolation and silence, as she scrubs the floors of a top-secret laboratory that houses a classified experiment. Soon enough, Elisa uncovers the secret they’re trying to hide, and forms an unlikely bond with the creature in the water. Before she knows it, she’s fallen in love. (Awww)
Who is in it?
The Shape of Water features an all-star cast that has been highly praised by critics. Sally Hawkins takes the leading role as the mute janitor, and is joined by Octavia Spencer, who appears as Elisa’s friend and co-worker, Zelda Fuller. The leading ladies were also joined on set by Michael Shannon (who stars as Colonel Richard Strickland), Richard Jenkins (Giles), Doug Jones (The Asset), Michael Stuhlbarg (Robert Hoffstetler), Lauren Lee Smith (Elaine Strickland), Nick Searcy (General Hoyt) and David Hewlett (Fleming).
Why all the hype?
It’s fair to say that The Shape of Water has so far received stellar reviews. The film was first previewed at the 74th Venice International Film Festival, as well as being screened at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, and has been met with amazingly positive reviews from critics. In fact, the movie currently stands at a whopping 96% on Rotten Tomatoes – which is a hugely impressive score, considering it hasn’t even been released yet. Praise for this movie comes in numerous forms. Many commend Sally Hawkins for her incredible performance as Elisa, and other remark on del Toro’s storytelling abilities – with many stating that The Shape of Water is his best movie yet. Here’s just a few of those reviews:
The Shape of Water is one of the most delightful films of the year. And it is definitely the best film ever to be a romantic comedy, a melodrama, a spy thriller, a heist caper, a superhero blockbuster and a monster movie all at once. – BBC
Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water is that big romantic all-out imaginative coup (with a sly political undercurrent) that so many of us have been waiting for from the director. – Sight and Sound
One of those movies that seems to imprint it’s gushing love affair with other movies – with the flickering euphoria of classic cinema – onto every image. – A.V Club
