There are two things we love in this world – Star Wars and Monopoly. Granted, both of them cause some pretty intense arguments in our house, but together they are a match made in heaven. Which is why we were pretty excited when the Hasbro Star Wars Monopoly game was released in 2015, and so were Star Wars fans all across the world.
However, fans were astonished when they found a key character missing from the set. Yep, there was Luke Skywalker, there was Darth Vader, there was Finn and there was Kylo Renn. But where was Rey? Leaving out one of the main characters from The Force Awakens irritated and angered fans, who started a trending hashtag of #wheresrey to boycott the game and bring attention to the blatant exclusion of one of the franchise’s leading ladies. But it wasn’t just the fans who disagreed with her absence. The Force Awakens director, J.J. Abrams also had his day, branding it ‘preposterous.’ Yes, J.J.!
After the initial reaction, Hasbro announced in January that they would be updating the 2015 Star Wars Monopoly game to include Rey – but we’re still waiting. When Hasbro was asked by The Associated Press about the nonexistent update, they received this reply:
In early 2016, Hasbro updated the 2015 Star Wars: Monopoly game to add a Rey token. This product was sold to retailers in several markets around the world, but it is not available for sale in the U.S due to insufficient interest.
We call shade.
Despite the fact the Hasbro spokeswoman has confirmed fans can buy the upgraded set in retailers across other nations, including France and the UK, one family in the United Kingdom have since bought the revised Star Wars Monopoly, and guess what? Rey was still missing.
Hasbro has since reported that fans who have already bought the game can contact Hasbro’s Customer Service to request the piece. We’ll believe that when we see it…
