I mean, who doesn’t love The Matrix? This genius cyberpunk movie was released in 1999 and soon became a huge hit. And let’s be honest, we all wanted to be, or had a super huge crush on Morpheus…
But according to sources, the Matrix is getting a reboot! (Yay). This comes from The Hollywood Reporter who has said that the production company, Warner Bros. are in the early stages of redeveloping the movie classic. And this makes us incredibly happy.
It has been reported that Zak Penn is in talks to produce the treatment, or first draft, of the movie script. And we really hope this is true. Penn has turned his writing hand to some of the best scripts out there and has provided his own ideas and story assistance to the likes of Elektra, The Avengers, and X-Men: The Last Stand, so it seems like the Matrix would be
right up his street.
First rumors have sprouted that Michael B. Jordan – who you might recognize from the hit film, Creed – could potentially be the headliner for the new movie. He has yet to formally confirm anything…but you know what they say, there’s no smoke without fire, and there’s no rumor without source. Apparently, Keanu Reeves has said that he’d love to get on board with the new movie, and would love to reprise his role as Neo, but according to sources, Warner Bros. doesn’t want him back and are likely to choose another actor to play Neo even if Jordan turns down the role. Oooh, burn.
It has been said that talks of a Matrix reboot has been happening for years, and the original Matrix producer has approached Warner Bros. with his ideas for a while. But they have been hesitant to enter into a deal with the producer because of his reputation in the past. He has previously had issues with his budgets and had a less-than-happy relationship with the original Matrix trilogy creators, the Wachowskis.
However, it seems like they have now found a common ground, and it may be because the Wachowskis are not involved in the creation of the new reboot. However, there is speculation that Warner Bros. executives will seek out the Wachowskis before finalizing anything, as they were some of the big figures in creating the original hit trilogy.
At the moment, there’s nothing set in stone about production start dates…but we can say this, the world is ready for more Matrix in their lives! According to some employees of Warner Bros., there is talk that the Matrix could be untouchable and difficult to live up to because of its original success, but The Hollywood Reporter notes that the opportunity is too tempting to ignore. We hope they don’t ignore it either…we’re ready.
