Over the years, The Grinch has had a real ‘thing’ about stealing Christmas. In 1957, he made his first debut in Dr. Seuss’s children’s book and was then turned into a quirky cartoon in the late ‘60s, before Jim Carrey transformed him into the Christmas-stealing creature in the 2000 live-action version that has since become a cult classic. But it seems he’s at it again, and he’ll be back to steal Christmas in 2018 – and this time, he’ll be played by Benedict Cumberbatch (we know, how perfect is that?!)
The news has been confirmed by Universal’s Illumination Entertainment after they released their first image of the new re-imagined Grinch. And he is super CG.
But the new movie doesn’t come as a complete surprise, as we know Illumination have wanted to take on The Grinch for many years now. Last year, the Illumination Entertainment CEO Chris Meledandri spoke of their new concept and the story behind The Grinch.
I think that the essence of this film is the notion of this cynicism comedically expressed in the Grinch and this absolute innocence represented in Cindy Lou, on a collision course with one another through the course of this movie.
At the moment, Illusion is keeping their cards close to their chest. So far, they have confirmed Benedict as the Grinch, and released their poster. But there’s no word of Cindy Lou casting, or whether the story will be a sequel, prequel or remake. We guess we’ll have to wait and see…
