It’s quite a departure from his usual roles…

When you think of Zac Efron, you think of the cutesy singing jock from High School Musical, the lovely Link from Hairspray, the bad neighbor from, well… Bad Neighbors, and the hunky lifeguard in the upcoming Baywatch movie. But it seems Efron is embarking on a career-defining move with his upcoming movie role – where he will play the serial killer, Ted Bundy.

The new movie drama will be entitled, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile and will follow the life and story of Ted Bundy from his ex-girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer’s point of view – through her denial, and her acceptance of the fact that the man she once loved was capable of such evil. Bundy was active during the 1970s, where he killed over 30 women before Kloepfer eventually turned him into the police.

Zac has confirmed that he will be starring in the new drama as the serial killer – and we must say, we were pretty surprised. This is a huge role change from the all-American, jock-style character we know (and love) of Efron’s – but Zac will be in very good hands. Extremely Wicked is set to be directed by Joe Berlinger, who has previously directed the Intent to Destroy and Metallica documentaries and was even nominated for an Oscar for his work. At the moment, there’s no news on who will play Kloepfer, but with Zac in the leading role, we can expect big things from the leading lady.

The new drama will start filming in October, but it seems the producers are eager to get to work – and to get to work with Zac. Nicolas Chartier, one of Extremely Wicked’s producers, has said,

I have been trying to work with Zac Efron for a long time. From his dramatic turn in ‘Paperboy’ to his hilarious performance in ‘Neighbors,’ he continues to impress audiences and critics alike with his extraordinary versatility and range.

We’re incredibly interested to see how he fares in this tasking role.
