Okay, so it’s no secret that, like, EVERYONE, in the whole entire world, galaxy and universe loves Star Wars (yep, even the Aliens who live down the road from you). So of course, we’re super stoked for The Last Jedi to finally be released in December. However, obsessing over a movie that isn’t out yet does get a little tedious after a while, so I guess we’ll just have to obsess over THREE movies that aren’t out yet – because Rian Johnson will be making a brand new Star Wars trilogy! *violently screams the house down*

Rian Johnson to write and direct NEW Star Wars trilogy

Yuh-huh, Disney announced the news earlier today and confirmed that their Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson will continue to work with the Disney/LucasFilm team to write and direct the first movie in a brand new Star Wars trilogy. He will be joined by his longtime pal and workmate, Ram Bergman, who will be on hand to produce the new movies. Although they have yet to divulge much information about the new trilogy, we do know that it WON’T follow the typical Skywalker saga we’ve all grown to love. Instead, it will separate itself from the original Star Wars themes and introduce ‘new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.’ We’re so up for this.

The president of LucasFilm, Kathleen Kennedy, has released a statement about the new trilogy.

We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.

This news will obviously put 43-year-old Rian Johnson even further into the realm of directing legends, and we can’t wait to see what new and exciting things he brings to the Star Wars universe (and what we can ultimately obsess over for years to come). Oh yeah.
