We’ve heard talk of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One for some time, so imagine our excitement when both a trailer AND exclusive SDCC footage was released at Comic Con this weekend. Set in 2045, this dystopian movie is ready to show us what a world dominated by virtual reality would look like… And while living predominantly through VR sounds pretty scary, the movie itself looks epic.
Ready Player One, based on the 2011 Ernest Cline novel of the same name, is set in a world torn apart by a severe energy crisis. Wade Watts, the main protagonist, played by Tye Sheridan, is on the hunt for an ‘Easter Egg’ in a virtual reality game that could lead to him inheriting a small fortune. Think of it as an epic treasure hunt, in a VR world. During the trailer, eagle-eyed fans will notice The Iron Giant (who Spielberg said is going to feature quite heavily in the movie), Freddy Krueger, the DeLorean, and Akira. Not failing to mention the merge of 1980s nostalgia with futuristic technology, of course… So, a bit like Tron then?
During the showing of the exclusive footage (which you can watch alongside the trailer below), both Spielberg and Cline received a standing ovation. There had been many talks about who would direct the movie, with Spielberg himself worrying that they’d need someone younger at the helm – although many of his movies feature within the story. However, by the looks of the footage so far, they definitely found the right man for the job.
Ready Player One is due for release at the end of March 2018. Starring alongside Tye Sheridan are the likes of Simon Pegg, Olivia Cooke, T.J. Miller, Ben Mendelsohn, and Mark Rylance. All we can say is we are Player One, and we’re so ready.
