The Godfather is, undeniably, one of the finest films of all time. Francis Ford Coppola’s gangster epic defined the genre, won Marlon Brando a deserved Academy Award, and made Al Pacino a star. Often imitated, never equaled, the movie about the Corleone crime family trying to compete with rival gangs has become a Hollywood classic. I’m gonna make you an offer you can’t refuse – here are some ace movies like The Godfather to binge-watch, like now.
The Best Movies Like The Godfather
The Godfather is pretty much the benchmark for the gangster epic and everything that comes with it. So, when considering movies similar to The Godfather, you can expect, violence, corruption, salty language, lots of nods to Sicilian culture, and no small amount of racketeering!
One of the finest gangster movies ever made, Goodfellas gave us everything we loved about The Godfather, plus a little more psycho with Joe Pesci’s character! Martin Scorsese certainly knows how to film violence, and there’s plenty of it to go around here. The movie follows the life of Henry Hill and his time in the mafia, focusing on the dealing of Italian-American crime. Brilliantly written, wonderfully directed, and impeccably acted, if you like The Godfather, you’ll adore Goodfellas.
Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Some may disagree, but this is my all-time favorite gangster movie, and, in my view, Sergio Leone’s finest work. I can already see my friend who’s a total Eastwood nut getting agitated, but this film is just a masterpiece. The flick follows the lives of three youngsters from the Jewish ghetto in New York, who rise to become prominent players in NYC’s organized crime scene. If there was any movie to rival The Godfather for an insight into the world of Italian-American crime, it’s this one.
When putting together a list of movies like The Godfather, you can’t possibly pass Bugsy by! Based on the life of Bugsy Siegel, and starring Warren Beatty in one of the performances of his career, Bugsy is an ultra-violent and captivating character study. Wonderfully paced, just like The Godfather, and full of riveting and realistic performances, this is one of those under the radar gangster flicks they stick on cable at 11pm on a Friday night. Next time you catch it on the box, be sure to tune in.
Scarface is one of the most iconic gangster movies ever and is a similar movie to The Godfather in a lot of ways. Tony Montana’s journey is similar to that of Michael Corleone’s. Both are young, naive men, learning their way in the criminal world, who ascend to be the rulers of empires, and, it seems kind of fitting that Al Pacino should play both characters. There might not be any horse heads in beds, but the chainsaw-shower scene is up there with the most intense ever filmed.
City of God (2002)
Arguably the best film ever to come out of Brazil, City of God is an unflinching look at the brutality of street crime and child-gangs in the favelas of Rio De Janeiro. Sure, it might not seem like it has much in common with the sophistication of The Godfather, but the themes of loyalty, family, and vengeance are clear to see in both movies. An epic, sprawling, unforgiving, coming-of-age tale, set against a backdrop of one of the world’s most violent cities.
There aren’t many films out there as memorable and unforgettable as The Godfather – there’s a reason it is regularly cited as one of the best films of all time. But, I’m sure you’ll agree that, if you want movies like The Godfather, these are pretty much top drawer. Don’t believe me? Check them out for yourself, you know you can’t refuse!
