In case you have been living under a rock (or in a swamp) for the past ten years, Shrek is the hilarious modern shake-up of a fairytale, that follows our unlikely hero, a large green ogre, as he finds love, acceptance and an annoying talking donkey pal along the way. Once you have exhausted all 4(!) of the films in this franchise, you might be looking for movies like Shrek, and we have got your back!
Movies like Shrek
Animated films are no longer just for kids, and in fact, one of the best things about Shrek is the hidden adult jokes and innuendos that appeal to grown-ups as well as the silly potty humor and lovable characters.
If you’re looking for another DreamWorks Animation film, Madagascar is a fantastic place to start! Like Shrek, we follow a group of quirky individuals (in this case a bunch of zoo animals), each with hilarious habits and jokes that go over the heads of little ones but land with the parents. Our four main animal characters are trying to escape from the Central Park Zoo and end up on Madagascar – hilarity ensues.
Shark Tale (2004)
If you love the all-star cast of Shrek (Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz!), then you will love the cast of Shark Tale, including Will Smith, Robert De Niro, Jack Black and Angelina Jolie! Another DreamWorks Animation, our unlikely hero in Shark Tale, is Oscar who accidentally convinces the whole ocean that he is a shark slayer.
Monsters, Inc. (2001)
If you love the unlikely hero of Shrek, you need to check out Pixar’s Monsters, Inc where the main characters are literal monsters. Similarly to Shrek, these guys are misunderstood and are pretty loveable despite appearances – in fact, if Shrek moved from his swamp, he could probably get a job working with Scully and Mike!
A Bug’s Life (1998)
A Bug’s Life follows a group of bugs (of course) as they protect their home from evil grasshoppers. Shrek isn’t exactly the most attractive main character, and let’s be honest, neither are the bugs in A Bug’s Life and yet both movies show that even the oddest looking creatures can be pretty cute when you get to know them! If you like the message behind Shrek, you’ll love A Bug’s Life.
The Lego Movie (2014)
If you like the clever script full of humor and slight satire in Shrek, you will enjoy The Lego Movie. This is another film that on the surface is made for children, but in reality is a family romp. The Lego Movie follows a nondescript man who is thrust into being a hero – just like Shrek! The only difference is that this guy is made of Lego. It shouldn’t work, but it really does!
The Princess Bride (1987)
If you like the unique fairytale aspect of Shrek, you will love The Princess Bride. It’s not an animated film but we follow a princess who has been kidnapped before getting married and her journey, with an unlikely hero, to get back home. A very funny, likable and quotable twist on a fairytale – making it one of the best movies like Shrek!
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)
Another live-action comedy film, this is another twist on a classic tale. If you love the silly singing Robin Hood in Shrek, you will find even more of this humor in Robin Hood: Men in Tights – including some goofy songs! The story follows Robin of Loxley who has just escaped from jail only to find his family home has been taken over by the evil Prince John, and hilarity ensues from him trying to regain his homeland.
Shrek is a film that you and your whole family can watch again and again and find new parts to laugh at or quote. If you are looking for new favorites to have the same effect, hopefully, this list ticks your boxes!
