Pirates of Caribbean is the movie credited with almost single-handedly getting people interested in pirates again. After the genre drowned in a shipwreck, and audiences lost interest, it didn’t seem like there was much hope – enter POTC! The movie has that swashbuckling charm about it, with Johnny Depp perfectly cast as the useless but loveable rogue, Captain Jack Sparrow. The sequels may not have lived up to standard, but the original certainly helped capture the spirit of adventure. If you’re looking for movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, may I recommend the following choices for your viewing pleasure? Now, where did I leave that rum?
Movies Like Pirates of the Caribbean
If you are seeking movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, you’ll be looking for a swashbuckling and legendary adventure. Movies with swordfights, buried treasure, and some cool mythology. Quest films are the order of the day here, and they really help capture our imaginations. These are some of the choices I uncovered; see what you make of them.
Cutthroat Island (1995)
I think this movie gets a bad rap, and unfairly so. Yes, it was a flop, yes it killed off the pirate genre, and yes, it is largely credited as being the movie that bankrupted Carolco Films. But, having said all of that, I rewatched it recently, and it’s really not that bad. It also has pretty much the same plot – a female pirate and her crew race against their rivals to find a lost island full of buried treasure. Sure, the movie is cheesy, and the acting in places is questionable, but it has heart, it has character, and it’s a fun way of spending a couple hours. If you’re looking for similar movies to Pirates of the Caribbean, you should check this one out.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)
An oldie, but a goodie, this is one of those movies that has definitely stood the test of time, and whose paw prints are all over Pirates. Professor Aronnax and his crew are searching for a legendary sea monster when they encounter the mysterious Captain Nemo. Adventures at sea, cool ships, monsters of the deep, and, also, based on a theme-park ride. 20,000 Leagues is a rip-roaring adventure in a similar vein to the adventures of Jack Sparrow. I have no doubt that this is a flick you’ll enjoy if you loved Pirates of the Caribbean; particularly if you’re fond of technicolor.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
It might not be set on the high seas, but, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider has a lot of similarities to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. An intrepid explorer travels the globe in search of treasures and artifacts, as well as getting embroiled in a dangerous battle with the authorities. This is a fun and engaging adventure story, with Angelina Jolie taking the lead as the titular heroine. The movie is one that has been very underappreciated in the past, and, if you dig Pirates of the Caribbean, you’ll certainly dig Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
The Goonies (1985)
The Goonies actually shares more in common with the Pirates movies than you might think. There are maps, clues, booby traps, hidden treasures, and pieces of eight – not to mention bad guys trying to claim the treasure for themselves. Sure, the movie is set in modern times, and doesn’t take place on the high seas – but the movie does share elements with Pirates, and there’s a cool pirate ship as well! The film is a definite delight and treasure of its own, and one of my favorite movies of all time.
The Lone Ranger (2013)
The Lone Ranger is helmed by Pirates director Gore Verbinski and also stars Johnny Depp, but that’s not all this has in common with Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s a classic adventure story set in the Old West that follows the Lone Ranger and sidekick Tonto as defenders of justice. There are more than a few nods to Pirates here, and the movie executes its set pieces in much the same way. Sure, it didn’t do too well at the box office, but it’s a pretty entertaining movie a few years on, so be sure to check it out.
Pirates of the Caribbean is the movie that made me yearn for adventure movies once again. It is heaps of fun, has some cool action, great humor, and one of the best entrances in movie history. If you’re looking for movies like Pirates of the Caribbean to help scratch that action-adventure itch, I reckon these films might just be ideal for you.
