Snakes, why did it have to be snakes?! Everyone’s favorite archaeologist has been romping across our screens for over 30 years now, and, it looks like there’s going to be a fifth Indy installment in the future. The adventures, the quips, the stunts, and the uncovering of ancient mysteries are just a few of the things that make Indiana Jones such delightful viewing. If you’re looking for more movies like Indiana Jones, I reckon I’ve found just the list for you!
The Top Movies Like Indiana Jones
If you’re looking for films of a similar ilk, you’ll be craving adventure, explosions, chases, fisticuffs, romance, and a great showdown. So, these are some of the top movies to check out if you feel like you need another dose of Doctor Jones and his action-adventure remedy.
The Mummy (1999)
The Mummy came out at the back end of the ‘90s, and I feel it was actually quite an underrated movie. I’m yet to see the remake, but I am rather fond of this one. Brendan Fraser cements his place as an action star, in the role of adventurer Rick O’Connell who awakens a mummy during an archaeological dig. The film has so many references to Indy, not to mention the main character, and the pursuit of archaeological artifacts; and, as a bonus, you get to see Rachel Weisz kicking butt!
This comedy-adventure flick passed a lot of people by after its release in the mid-’00s, but it’s certainly worth a revisit. Matthew McConaughey’s Dirk Pitt heads to Africa in search of a lost ship that will bring him fortune and glory. There are plenty of ways in which the movie is like Indiana Jones, including globetrotting in search of lost treasure, and plenty of quips. It’s a fun and family-friendly adventure movie that will quench your thirst for adventure for a couple hours.
National Treasure (2004)
This Nic Cage vehicle came out in 2004 and focused on a historian carrying out a heist to secure a legendary artifact. This could easily have been the plot to an Indiana Jones movie, and, while it lacks the Indy appeal, it’s still a perfectly decent watch. A swashbuckling adventure, with Nic Cage on good form, and a strong supporting cast. The movie did well enough for them to make a sequel as well so you might want to check that out too!
King Solomon’s Mines (1985)
Based on the famous book of the same name, King Solomon’s Mines is actually a huge amount of fun. Adventurer Allan Quatermain gears up for an adventure trying to find a woman’s missing father in the wilds of Africa. This is probably the movie most similar to Indiana Jones of any on my list, and that’s because it directly references and parodies Indy in many ways. If you love Indiana Jones, you’ll enjoy King Solomon’s mines, and the tongue-in-cheek approach it takes.
Romancing the Stone (1984)
This excellent romantic action-adventure flick stars Kathleen Turner as a woman who must travel to the jungles of Colombia, and deliver a treasure map to save her sister. Michael Douglas stars as the mercenary who tags along for the ride (and the payday). Romancing the Stone, released 3 years after the first Indy film, is a very similar movie to Indiana Jones, and that’s what makes it so great. If you’ve not seen this film yet, I suggest you check it out as soon as possible.
Indiana Jones is such an iconic character and film series, and one that will continue to thrill audiences for years. Watching the Indy movies, again and again, is something I love, but, it’s also great to branch out and find movies like Indiana Jones to watch as well. And I think that the ones listed above are a great place to start.
