Let’s be honest; we’re total Potterheads. Although we were pretty upset when our Hogwarts letter wasn’t delivered by Owl on our 11th birthday, we’re not going to punish Harry, Ron, and Hermione for an administrative error (although we might put in a complaint to the Ministry of Magic). Instead, we’re pretty content with following the life of The Boy Who Lived as he embarks on a new life in the wizarding world – but there’s one problem, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is after him… for neither can live while the other survives. If you need a bit more magic in your life after you’ve finished the series, check out these movies like Harry Potter.
Top Movies like Harry Potter
Now that Harry Potter is all grown up and working as the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement (aw, it seems like only yesterday he was wiping troll bogies off his wand), we’re lacking a bit of magic in our lives. Luckily, there are other movies like Harry Potter that can keep us entertained – at least until Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 comes out next year…
Lord of the Rings (2001 – 2003)
Okay, so let’s quickly brush over the obvious similarities. Yep, there are a few men playing with their wands (eugh, not like that, that’s disgusting), there’s a couple of old dudes with long, grey beards and tall hats (are Gandalf and Dumbledore the same person?), and there are a few magical creatures thrown into the mix (although Dobby will always be our favorite). Besides this, the two movies are incredibly similar in their content. Just like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings follows an outsider, who embarks on a quest that may change his life forever – in this case, Frodo Baggins aims to destroy the One Ring once and for all. However, he doesn’t do it alone. Harry enlists the help of Harry and Hermione, and Frodo has Pippin and Samwise Gamgee. It’s all about friendship.
The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)
If you like Harry Potter, you’ll also love The Spiderwick Chronicles. Like Harry Potter, this fantasy adventure movie is based on a magical book series. Within the first five minutes of The Spiderwick Chronicles, you’re hooked. As you follow Jared Grace through the magical Spiderwick Estate, you find yourself growing even more attached to the wondrous world, and all of the faeries, goblins, and trolls that live inside of it. Although there’s no Thestrals, Unicorns of Nifflers, so Harry Potter wins on the magical creatures front…
The Chronicles of Narnia (2005 – 2010)
One of the best aspects of Harry Potter is its ability to transport us into a completely magical world, away from the trials and tribulations of everyday life. However, the Floo Network is not connected to the magical world of Narnia… so you’ll need to use a magical wardrobe instead. This story follows the lives of the Pevensie children, who are evacuated to the countryside during the second world war. However, instead of exploring the surrounding fields, they explore the magical land of Narnia and hang out with Aslan and Mr. Tumnus.
If you love Harry Potter, you’ll love Labyrinth – because really, it’s impossible not to love a movie with David Bowie in it. The story of Labyrinth follows the life of Sarah as she battles through an otherworldly maze on a quest to find her brother, who has been kidnapped by the evil goblin king. However, just like Harry Potter’s journey to the Philosopher’s Stone, Sarah’s journey to the center of the maze is not easy – and she must battle mythical creatures who are out to hinder her success. Oooooh.
Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief (2010)
Another movie similar to Harry Potter is Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief – you could say, it’s a bit ‘flashy’ though (lol, geddit?) Just like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson learns that he’s not an ordinary teenager, but has powers beyond his beliefs. In fact, this little dude is the son of Poseidon! However, as the Gods learn of his skills, Zeus accuses him of a terrible crime – did Percy steal his lightning bolt? Percy must embark on a mission to save the world from the war of the Gods, and return Zeus’s precious lightning bolt. We wonder if he can do it…
If you’re a magical Potterhead like us, it’s fair to say that we’re a little bit obsessed with fantasy-adventure movies. Luckily, there are loads of movies like Harry Potter to watch because y’know, you’re a wizard (Harry). So what are you doing still reading this?! Wave your magic wand and turn your TV on right now!
