Science-fiction masterpiece Blade Runner lit up the ‘80s, and has since been revered as one of the finest films ever made, and quite right too! Okay, I might be biased because it’s my all-time favorite film, but it’s also perfect on so many levels. I’ve spent the last 30 years trying to find movies like Blade Runner, and they’ve finally gotten around to making a sequel! Before you go see it, here are some movies like Blade Runner you can check out in the meantime.
The Best Movies Like Blade Runner
Sci-fi can often be a mixed bag, and, it’s especially difficult when comparing other movies to a masterpiece like Blade Runner. Think dystopian futures, grizzled heroes, and breathtaking special effects. These are some of the movies out there that have helped to scratch my Blade Runner itch over the years.
In space, no one can hear you scream. This sci-fi romp, also directed by Ridley Scott is pretty much a perfect film. Sure, plot-wise it’s a million miles away from the most-modern landscape of Blade Runner, but it still has that unmistakable Ridley Scott touch. The visual aesthetic, great characters, and narrative structure make it every inch a movie like Blade Runner. Oh, and Sigourney Weaver is awesome in it!
Total Recall (1990)
Some might argue this was when Arnie was at the peak of his career, and it’s hard to dispute that claim. Total Recall works so well because it’s a quirky visual and cerebral powerhouse of a film. The lush landscapes, epic metropoles, nefarious characters, and the dark underbelly of futuristic Earth are all themes that make this a similar film to Blade Runner. It’s got some cool action, great one-liners, and Arnie actually does a pretty decent acting job too.
We all love Kurt Russell, right? Well, welcome to the best Kurt Russell flick you’ve never heard of. Soldier, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, takes the replicant theme from Blade Runner and explores what might happen if the military used these clones. It’s an intelligent and taut sci-fi action-thriller, taking place in the same universe as Blade Runner, and penned by the same screenwriter. Get it on your list right now – you won’t be sorry!
Ghost in the Shell (1995)
No, I’m not talking about the recent live-action one with Scarlett Johanssen, but, instead, the animated 1995 vehicle. This cyberpunk anime owes a huge debt to Blade Runner, with themes including the integration of cyborgs into society, cybercrime, a jaded cop, and the isolation that comes in a world completely reliant on technology. If you dig Blade Runner, I have no doubt you will like Ghost in the Shell.
Strange Days (1995)
Before Kathryn Bigelow was an Academy Award winner, she was merely a crazy talented director who made this absolute belter of a movie. Set at the dawn of the millennium, Strange Days follows Ralph Fiennes’ character, as a low-life selling data discs with VR recordings on them, who stumbles across a snuff clip, changing everything. The movie apes Blade Runner by focusing on the anarchy of the future, and the negative aspects of technology. Gritty, grainy, and ridiculously underrated!
Blade Runner is one of those movies that will stay with you long after you’ve watched it. And, if you’re looking for a bunch of movies like Blade Runner, you’ll do pretty well with the ones I’ve listed. With the sequel due to hit cinemas any day now, I for one await a viewing with bated breath. It has all the potential to become a modern classic, and, even if it sucks, I still have these movies to fall back on!
