If you’ve never seen A Beautiful Mind – well, you kinda need to get on that ASAP (we promise you won’t regret it). If you have watched this movie, you’ll know how bloomin’ brilliant it is, because you’ve probably watched it about 1638 times. This drama follows the life of the incredible mathematician and Nobel Prize winner, John Nash and is a tragic tale of a genius mind, flecked with psychological struggle and self-discovery. Because y’know, we get it, it’s tough being a genius. So, if you’re looking for movies like A Beautiful Mind, you’ve come to the right place…
The Best Movies Like A Beautiful Mind
Let’s be honest, the best movies like A Beautiful Mind aren’t Disney movies – because that’s not what we signed up for. If you want singing and dancing, you should probably look at the movies like The Sound of Music *winks*. Instead, these tragic dramas follow the lives of genius minds who have been plagued with troubles and strife, but have (mostly) come out the other side.
The Theory of Everything (2014)
As much as we love all of the movies on this list – we just had to put The Theory of Everything at the top. You’ll see why when you watch it. Everything about this film screams genius; from the casting (Eddie Redmayne is the perfect Stephen Hawking), to the script (totes emosh), to the historical accuracy (Stephen Hawking absolutely loved it), to the emotional impact this movie had on our lives, and to the fact that Stephen Hawking is the ultimate Genius. We love you, Hawking!
If you like A Beautiful Mind, you’ll love Amadeus. This movie is an adaptation of Peter Schaffer’s incredible play, and follows the rivalry between two of the greatest composers in history – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. We see Mozart through the eyes of Salieri, one naturally talented genius to another, and watch as Salieri becomes consumed by his jealousy and admiration for his rival. Will he let his devious mind overpower his genius? Well, you’ll just have to watch to see for yourself, ladies and gents…
Good Will Hunting (1997)
I mean, even if you haven’t watched Good Will Hunting (which you should have done) you’ve probably heard of it. With an all-star cast, including the legend that is Robin Williams, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, this movie shows that a genius brain can be found within a modest man or woman – no matter their background or upbringing. In this case, Matt Damon is a lowly janitor, who solves incredible mathematical equations in his spare time. Because apparently that’s what geniuses do. We wouldn’t know.
The Man Who Knew Infinity (2016)
If you’re a fan of A Beautiful Mind, you just have to watch The Man Who Knew Infinity. This movie stars Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons, and follows the life of one of the most famous mathematicians to come out of India; Srinivasa Ramanujan. Although this movie showcases his genius mind, the storyline also covers his troubled relationships, his move to Cambridge, England, and the racism he suffered away from his home country. This one will get you thinking, and make you want to think even more… about everything!
Shutter Island (2010)
Oooh, this one is good if you love a good psychological thriller (which is everyone, right?) Shutter Island features Leonardo DiCaprio as U.S Marshall Teddy Daniels as he embarks on a new case with his new partner (played by Mark Ruffalo). The pair find themselves at Ashecliffe Hospital – an insane asylum on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean. They are there to find a missing woman…but will Teddy discover something else in the process? (The answer is yes).
Let’s be honest, we’re pretty darn obsessed with A Beautiful Mind and Russell Crowe’s incredible performance as John Nash. However, we’d be doing ourselves a cinematic disservice if we didn’t check out these movies like A Beautiful Mind – because they’re awesome. So, give them a go and let us know what you think!
