There’s nothing like a good spoonful of Mary Poppins to make the medicine go down, and now the sequel is well under way.
Disney’s decision to create a sequel to the 1964 classic has been in the works for a while now, but this is the first time we’re seeing some behind the scenes footage of the magical story – through an epic feature story in Entertainment Weekly.
Mary Poppins Returns will follow on from the original Mary Poppins movie, and will flash-forward to The Great Depression with a grown-up Jane, Michael, and Michael’s three children as they struggle through their daily lives. And do you know what that calls for? A NANNY! (and a random lamplighter, for some reason).
The Girl on the Train and The Devil Wear Prada star, Emily Blunt will be taking on the titular role of Mary Poppins in the new movie and will be joined by Hamilton star and writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda as the lamplighter, Jack. Other cast members include Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, and Meryl Streep. I mean, you can’t get much better than that, can you?
The new movie will also see a return of Mary Poppins alum, Dick Van Dyke – although he won’t be returning to his original role. Dyke will be starring as Mr. Dawes Jr., the son of the original Mary Poppins villain. Ooooh.
Filming for Mary Poppins Returns is already well underway, being produced and directed by Rob Marshall. And there’s even more good news… there’s going to be some brand new songs to sing along to!
We can’t wait for this to hit theaters in December 2018.
