If you’ve been keeping up to date with RetroEnt recently (duh, we’re amazing), you’ll know that we’ve kinda turned into the fan page of Guillermo del Toro…and we’re totally okay with it. Yep, the Mexican film director has found a place in our hearts ever since the day we heard he was onboard to write and direct the quirky new release, The Shape of Water (although we’ve always been a big fan). Since then, we have counted down the days until its release, and become even more obsessed with the movie that has absolutely smashed the competition and earned itself a whopping SEVEN Golden Globe nominations (we totally called it).Considering the success of The Shape of Water – and it hasn’t even been released in the UK yet – you’d think the famous director would want a little break. Y’know, take a trip to the Bahamas, sip on some gin and juice, and get those #hotdogsorlegs out in the sun, or something like that. However, that’s not the case. Although he’s decided to take a year off and recuperate, del Toro has already committed to a brand new project as soon as he gets back…and it sounds awesome!
According to Variety, Guillermo del Toro has taken on a new project with Fox Searchlight, and is on board to write, direct and produce a remake of the popular film noir classic, Nightmare Alley.
If you’re a film noir whizzkid, you’ll know that this movie was released in 1947, and has since become a cult classic. The film starred Joan Blondell and Tyrone Power as a mentalist/con man duo who find their victims in a second-rate traveling carnival. Following the rise and fall of a con man, the viewer also gets to witness a seedy relationship that takes an unexpected turn. Yep, it’s weird. It’s wonderful. Sounds right up Guillermo’s alley.
Although we know that Guillermo has signed up to the project, the likelihood is that we’ll have to wait a little while for it to reach our screens. Guillermo has an idea of the cinematic direction, but still needs to write a script – which may take some time. Or not. He is a genius, after all. Nevertheless, after the success of The Shape of Water, we have a feeling this will also be a smash hit…
