If there is one thing film directors love, it’s making movies, but perhaps there is something in their lives they love even more. That’s right, it’s their kids! Some movie directors can’t help but put the apple of their eye into their latest movie, showing them off to the whole world. “Look at how good and talented my child is!” These are some of the biggest Hollywood directors who couldn’t help but cast their kids.
Francis Ford Coppola
One of the greatest directors of his time, Francis Ford Coppola was the man in charge of the mega crime film series The Godfather. With the original and its sequel under his belt, Coppola was once again in charge of the third installment following the adventures of the Corleone family. Coppola’s daughter, Sophia had already featured in several of he father’s films including Rumble Fish, The Outsiders, and small roles in the first two Godfather movies. She was cast to replace Winona Ryder in the Godfather Part III, and despite his good intentions, critics were not fans of Sofia’s acting ability. Despite the criticism, that didn’t stop Sofia from going on to become an Oscar-winning director herself, thanks to 2003’s transatlantic drama Lost in Translation.
Judd Apatow loves directing a comedy or two and his most famous flicks include The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Funny People, and Trainwreck. Apatow’s daughters Maude and Iris were both cast in Knocked Up, and proved to be a hit so were later cast in the follow-up, This Is 40. They played the daughters of Paul Rudd and their real-life mom, Leslie Mann and were involved in some of the funniest scenes in the movie. The helping hand their father gave them in their acting careers has given both Maude and Iris a kickstart to stardom. Both Apatow daughters have appeared in movies and TV shows since being cast in their dad’s films.
It wasn’t just one or two of Clint Eastwood’s kids who were cast in his films, he threw in a whole bunch. After becoming one of the biggest actors in the world, Eastwood took to directing, becoming hugely successful at that too. It seems as though everything Eastwood touches turns to gold and all of his kids seem to have been born with the success gene, whatever that is. In Absolute Power, Eastwood cast his daughter Kimber Lynn, while Morgan was cast in Changeling and Million Dollar Baby. Kathryn and Francesca both feature in Jersey Boys, and Alison has appeared in several of her father’s works, including Midnight in the Garden and Bronco Billy. Kyle Eastwood prefers making music, but still appeared in his father’s movies such as Honkytonk Man and The Outlaw Josey Wales. Scott Eastwood has now made a name for himself and appeared in several films without his father, but he got his start by featuring in Clint’s films Gran Torino, Invictus, and Flags of our Fathers.
Building up one of the best movie portfolios a film director could ever hope for, Christopher Nolan has really made a name for himself. He brought the Dark Knight trilogy to life, becoming one of the best-loved version of Batman fans of the caped crusader have ever seen. He didn’t do it alone though, and he had the company of some of his children help him through his films by casting them in many of them. In Interstellar, Nolan cast his daughter Flora as a bystander, while his son Rory was a schoolkid held hostage on a bus in The Dark Knight Rises. Magnus, another of Nolan’s sons, was cast as the son of Dominick Cobb, while his other son, Oliver was also cast as a child in The Prestige.
Perhaps one of the greatest film directors of all time, Alfred Hitchcock wasn’t afraid to stick to his beliefs when it came to creative license. He also wasn’t afraid to stick his children in his films, despite the fact many were horror films. Hitchcock’s daughter Patricia had small roles in some of his best-known movies, films like Psycho, Stage Fright, and Strangers on a Train all featured the famous director’s child.
These are just some of the film directors who couldn’t help but put their pride and joy, or sometimes several of their pride and joys, into their movies. If ever you worry about breaking into the acting world then all you’ll need to do is ask your famous film director parent to cast you in something!
