If you’re the not the biggest fan of Despicable Me, with its fluffy unicorns (IT’S SO FLUFFY I’M GONNA DIEEEEEEEE) and adorable (yet slightly deadly) Minions, then Despicable Me has probably floated quietly past your to-watch movie list. For everyone else, it has not floated past quietly at all – but with many yellow bangs, whistles and shouts of minion-speak. It has, however, managed to shock us all with its impressive box-office numbers. Yep, Despicable Me is now the highest grossing animated movie franchise EVER!
Since its release on 30 June, Despicable Me 3 has rocked up a whopping box-office sum of $881.5 million. Think that’s a lot? Well, with all three of the Despicable Me movies and the Minion spin-offs, the franchise has now brought that number up to $3.5 billion – which has now passed Shrek’s $3.51 billion total. Wowza.
As if this wasn’t impressive enough, these numbers represent FOUR Despicable Me movies and FIVE Shrek movies. Sorry, Shrek.
The Despicable Me franchise follows the life of Gru, an evil villain whose life changes for the better when he adopts three sisters – but that doesn’t mean he’s going to stay out of trouble. With the help of his Minions, Gru either takes over the world or saves it (depending on how he feels that day). The first Despicable Me film was a huge hit when it was released in 2010, and racked up an incredible 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Despicable Me 2 a steady 73%. Although this third movie has received mixed reviews, you can’t deny it’s done a little somethin-somethin to those numbers!
Many of you may be looking at these numbers and thinking… huh? What about all of the other animated movies in the world? What about TOY STORY?! Well, the Minions passed Andy and those toys a while ago. In fact, Toy Story has only grossed $1.938 over the course of its run. However, with Toy Story 4 due to be released in 2019 (yasssss) Despicable Me could have a competitor for the top spot…
