Throughout her four-decade-long musical career, Cyndi Lauper has been no stranger to the world of musicals. In 2012, Cyndi wrote the songs for the hit Broadway and West End musical, Kinky Boots and was the first ever woman to receive a Tony Award for Best Score in the history of the Tony’s.
Now it seems Lauper is ready to do it all over again and is getting ready to write the score for a brand new Broadway adaptation of the 1988 movie, Working Girl. The popular rom-com, starring Sigourney Weaver, Harrison Ford and Melanie Griffith proved a huge hit when it was first released, and the original music by Carly Simon managed to win her an Oscar. So she’s got some pretty big (Kinky) boots to fill.
The Working Girl story follows a young secretary who does everything she can to climb to the top of the corporate tower during the end of the Reagan administration and is full of fun, energy, color, love, and the ‘80s. Perfect for Cyndi Lauper.
It seems she’s pretty excited herself:
I love the film Working Girl, and its story about a woman’s very unconventional road to success in the ‘80s is something I know a lot about. Women are still fighting for fundamental rights and equal pay!
We can’t wait to see what she brings to the stage.
