This Cars Theory Is Pretty Dark But Just in Time for the New Cars 3 Trailer!

Uhhh, so the cars basically destroyed humankind? Wonderful!

As we’ve said many a time – we just LOVE movie theories. We just can’t get enough of them. So when we heard this theory about our favorite animated car movie just in time for Cars 3, well…at first, we were kinda freaked out, and then we couldn’t believe how we’d never thought of it before. Minds = Blown.

So if you’ve ever watched the movie and thought behind the storyline, you might have thought – but how did the cars get there? Where do they come from? Where are the humans? Well, we’ve now got an answer. And it’s a pretty dark one.

The editor of Screen Crush, Matt Singer, spoke with the creative director of Cars at Pixar, Jay Ward – and he asked him how the Cars world came to be. His answer was:

If you think about this, we have autonomous car technology coming in right now. Its getting to the point where you can sit back in the car, and it drives itself. Imagine in the near-future when the cars keep getting smarter and smarter, and after one day they just go, ‘Why do we need human beings anymore? They’re just slowing us down. It’s just extra weight, let’s get rid of them.’ But the car takes on the personality of the last person who drove it. Whoa. There you go.

Erm. We don’t quite know what to think about that. So basically what the movie is telling us the future – that all of our AI cars are going to become so intelligent they’re going to kill us all and absorb our personalities into them. Great. Spiffing. Now don’t the characters just look that much more sinister?

But when you think of it, it (horrifically) makes sense. Remember the end of the second movie where it pretty much nearly ends in car genocide? Through this theory, the Car Pope must have been the last car to be driven by the human pope because he was killed by the cars, and his followers were all of the cars owned by his Catholic followers before the car purge.

Okay, so this doesn’t answer every single question we have about the movie. But this pretty dark theory doesn’t explain a lot. Maybe we’ll learn a bit more in the third movie?
Today, Disney Pixar have released their brand new trailer for the June 16 release date of Cars 3 – and there’s loads of footage to enjoy (and think about how all of the cars killed humans). The new film will feature the likes of Armie Hammer, Nathan Fillion, Cristela Alonzo and Kerry Washington and follows the story after Lightning McQueen gets sidelined from the sport he lives and breathes.
