In January, Batman star and all-around bad boy, Ben Affleck, stepped down from his directing duties for the new Batman movie – but don’t worry, he’s not going anywhere! He’s still onboard to play the superhero. Phew. After his decision, Affleck released this statement:
There are certain characters who hold a special place in the heart of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director.
And that director has recently been confirmed as Planet of the Apes director, Matt Reeves. Of course, we all expected changes as with any directorial switch-up – but we didn’t expect there to be a whole new script! This new information comes as a blow to Affleck, who wrote a script for the movie with DC legend, Geoff Johns before he stepped down as director.
In a recent MTV Happy Sad Confused podcast, Reeves has spoken about the changes involved.
No [we won’t be using that], it’s a new story. It’s just starting again. I’m excited about it. I think it’s going to be really cool.
This calls into question the villain and the storyline of the new Batman – will Deathstroke still be the evil supervillain? Who knows. However, we do know that Reeves is attempting to produce a noir-style movie, which follows the emotions, secrets, and psychology behind the Batman.
What do you think?
