Things You’ll Only Remember If You Grew Up In The ’00s in America

Oh, the memories…

If you grew up in the ’00s, you’ll probably look back on your childhood and think… ‘wtf?’ But looking back, some aspects of this era have their definite perks. Yes, you might regret your crimped pink hair, but at least you got to grow up with Spongebob. Take a look at the things you’ll only remember if you grew up in the ’00s….

You lied about your age to get on Facebook

Everyone was doing it, and everyone did it. Yes, even you. Facebook was the new ‘in’ thing, and you weren’t going to let age stop you. So what if you had to be 16 years old? You could easily just change your birthday to see what all the fuss was about…

You grew up with the Disney Channel

Whether your favorite was Hannah Montana, That’s So Raven!, Lilo and Stitch or Lizzie McGuire, the Disney Channel was your go-to channel to watch when you got in from school. Your homework could wait… Miley Stewart was just about to become Hannah Montana.

Boybands were the loves of your life

Fighting out which Jonas Brother was the best looking was just a daily occurrence for you and your friends. Joe Jonas was the edgy one, Kevin Jonas was the funny one, and Nick Jonas was the grown-up one. Which one was your crush?

    Justin Bieber was your soulmate

Justin Bieber was every ’00s girl’s crush and the style icon for every ’00s boy. He somehow made the bowl haircut look cool, and his voice… well, his voice was something else. And of course, his songs were all directed to you, because you were his, “Baby, baby, baby, oooooooh!”

And your boyfriend had to have a JB haircut

Because of your love for the one and only JB, your real-life boyfriend just had to be like your fake boyfriend. If he didn’t rock the Justin Bieber haircut, wear baggy jeans and colored sweatshirts… well, he just didn’t make the cut.

A time before cell phones and internet? What?

There was a time before cell phones? What was it, the stone age? Your ’00s life revolved around your cell phone and talking to your friends. Being disconnected from your cell phone for even just a minute would result in some serious separation anxiety. And you didn’t want that.

    Vine was your life

The ’00s made Vine cool, and your ultimate dream was to become a true Vine star. You’d post the most random videos that nobody would care about because you just had to ‘do it for the Vine!.’ The application took its last videos in 2016. R.I.P Vine. ’00s kids miss you.

You just had to wear Abercrombie and Fitch

Abercrombie and Fitch was the only acceptable brand of clothing to wear in the ’00s, with a small exception of Hollister… occasionally. Your favorite ’00s stars wore Abercrombie and Fitch (think The O.C) so, of course, you had to wear it too. If you didn’t have the A & F on your clothing, you were a nobody.

You completely related to Gilmore Girls

Lorelei and Rory Gilmore made your life complete, and you got way too into their lives. Who else wished they could move to Stars Hollow and become best friends with them? You practically grew up with Rory anyways, and you got really frustrated when she picked Dean AND Logan over Jesse. I mean, he’s a man who reads and is super good looking… come on, Rory.

    Soulja Boy Told ‘Em

You knew all the lyrics, and dance moves to Soulja Boy Tell’em – Crank That. It most likely became your cell phone ringtone at one point, and you loved nothing more than to show off your perfect routine at school dances – Supermans and all. Now watch me youuuuuuuuuuu!

You knew of a certain Sponge who lived in a certain Pineapple

Spongebob Squarepants was the weirdest concept when you think about it. A talking sponge? Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Is best friends with a starfish and a squirrel in a space suit? Huh? Nevertheless, Spongebob Squarepants was one of your favorite TV shows, and weirdly, taught you a lot about life.

    You were obsessed with Sudoku

Sudoku became a huge craze in the ’00s and trying to figure out where numbers 1-9 go in a square while matching those numbers up with lines and columns just became the most addictive game ever, and suddenly, all of your family was playing Sudoku.

    You really wanted crimped hair

’00s pop queens became your style icons, and when Christina Aguilera turned up on the red carpet with crimped hair and pink extensions… well, you just had to have crimped hair and pink extensions. And you loved it.

You wished you could be a Spy Kid

The ’00s was a great time for Spy movies and TV programs. You had your pick of Spy Kids, Phineas and Ferb, Kim Possible and Agent Cody Banks. Whichever one was your favorite, you always wished someone would turn up at your house and recruit you as a spy. Ah, that was the dream.

    Guitar Hero ruined your fingers

Guitar Hero was the game of the ’00s. Turning on your PlayStation, whacking out your Guitar Hero guitar and shredding the notes was your favorite go-to game after school. You’d secretly practice on your own, so you could invite your friends round them and impress them with your skills. Your secret is safe with us.

You watched Fred too many times

Because watching a teenage boy scream in a baby voice and do stupid things was so fun, right? We spent many hours wasting time in front of our computer desktops watching this guy. No regrets.

The Black Eyed Peas were your jam

What’s wrong with the world, mama? The Black Eyed Peas released “Where Is The Love?” in 2003, and it automatically became the song of the decade. You knew all the words, as well as feeling like you were making a very powerful, emotional statement. Many air grabs happened when you sang this song.

One day you wanted to blend in, the next you wanted to stand out

The ’00s was a difficult time in terms of fashion. Sometimes you wanted to be cool and casual, other times you wanted to go all out and wear your platform boots, combat pants, crop top, and chains. What you wore on Monday could be very different to what you wore on Tuesday. And of course on Wednesdays you wore pink.

Adam Sandler was in every single movie

I think it’s fair to say that Adam Sandler appeared in almost 80% of the movies released in the ’00s. You loved his humor and rude jokes, even though your parents may not have approved. You still watched all of them around your friends’ house, though.

IM’ing was the only way to communicate

IM’ing was the main form of communication in the ’00s. Even if your friend was sat right next to you, was across the room, or even in the same classroom, the only way to communicate was through Instant Messaging. The icing on the cake was the invention of Emoticons, and you could talk without using words. 🙂
