Looking back at horror games from over the years it’s easy to see that many have tried, and many have failed. However, there have been a few that have left even the most hardened of gamers in need of a clean set of underwear – not that we’re talking from experience. When it comes to the scariest horror games to have ever been invented, we need one thing: fear. After all, what better way could there be to get the adrenaline racing and hearts pumping?
Scariest Horror Games To Have Ever Been Invented
Although there have been plenty of horror games over the years, it takes a special release to make its way onto the list of the scariest horror games to have ever been invented. Just better hold onto your hair for this one.
Sometimes when it comes to horror, less is definitely more. This is one of those cases. The game consists of a boy running through various levels as he tries to overcome any obstacles that stand in his way. Little does he know there are several things that can – and will – end his life along the way without any warning. Plus, the beast at the end of it all is set to leave a lasting memory, but we’ll leave that one as a surprise. Just get ready to get up close and personal with some others.
Until Dawn (2015)
This is the horror game that put a whole new spin on the franchise. Why? Players get to choose what happens next. Knowing we are in control of our destiny makes this one of the scariest horror games ever to hit our screens. Plus, if you make a lasting decision, you’ll get a little butterfly. Better hope you don’t choose the wrong one. What starts as a simple trip between friends soon turns into getting attacked by a madman. Will they be able to find out who it is before it’s too late? Plus, it seems as if there is more to their former friends’ disappearance than meets the eye…
Silent Hill (1999)
When it comes to the scariest horror games ever invented, Konami usually isn’t far away. There have been so many Silent Hill releases over the years, but we had to go with the original. After all, it all had to start somewhere, right? It wasn’t just the devilish creatures and unknown beasts that made this game so scary either. No, the camera angles and fixed points of view meant players never knew what was lurking around any corner. Sometimes it’s walking into the unknown that makes it all that much scarier…
Okay, so this might not technically be a full-release game, but P.T. is still one of the most terrifying horror games of all time. And guess who’s behind it? Yup, that’s right; Konami is back at it again. The playable teaser was supposed to be a trailer for the new Silent Hill, but ended up getting released as its own stand-alone game instead. Walking around a circular hallway in a home sounds innocent enough, right? Try telling that to the creature in the bathroom or the woman that apparently doesn’t want to leave just yet.
As if being trapped with a ton of ruin-your-pants monsters wasn’t bad enough, the lead character, Daniel, is also battling against himself. He needs to stay out of the darkness and find light if he wants to hold onto his sanity. That’s not even the worst bit. Oh no, Amnesia is a game that doesn’t give the player access to any weapons. Instead, players have to run and hide from any beasts. Great. If you manage to hold onto your sanity and make it to the “water part” then congratulations – you are one of the few.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017)
Resident Evil has always provided us with some of the scariest horror games ever, but the seventh release in the franchise is the one to take a place on our list. Now, it’s time to introduce you to the Bakers. This family all appear to be infected with some kind of virus, but it’s the fact Biohazard comes in first person that got many people talking. As if playing a horror game wasn’t scary enough already, we can now enjoy all the lovely views in virtual reality – and we can’t wait.
Outlast – even the name leaves us shuddering. If taking a trip to an abandoned asylum is your thing then here you go. Sure, who doesn’t want to walk up to a creepy as heck building that seems to have plenty going on every night? We’re never put off, but it’s time to hide as just about everyone in there wants to hurt you, and there’s no option to carry a weapon. All you have is your night vision camera, but even that will run out of battery eventually. You might be able to sneak your way to the end, but will you ever truly escape Outlast?
Okay, we think we need a warm cup of cocoa and to sit in a very brightly lit room after exploring the scariest horror games to have ever been invented. We love an adrenaline rush as much as the next person, but is anyone brave enough to try all the games on the list? After all, you might be able to turn off the computer, but no one will ever truly be able to erase the memories…
