After the first game was released back in 1998, this young purple dragon has taken the world by storm. Hours of many childhoods were lost to playing as Spyro as you try and save all the dragons, dragonflies, and dragon realms, all the while collecting as many gems as you can. While we could easily switch on any Spyro game and instantly be taken back to our childhoods, there are plenty of other games like Spyro that give us new challenges – rather than rinsing through levels we’ve done 100 times.
Games Like Spyro
Being the hero, saving the world, and rescuing your friends are all things you’ll be able to do in these games like Spyro. We’ve managed to whittle the list down to just a few games (although it would be easy to get carried away here) that can bring your childhood back to life after all these years.
Rayman (1995 – 2015)
For twenty years we got to play as Rayman accompanied by Globox, the cowardly sidekick. The game is a side-scroller, meaning you can only travel left or right, but that doesn’t make it any easier. Just like Spyro, Rayman has many enemies he must defeat on his quest to save his world, but not without the help of his friends – isn’t that what it’s all about after all? There’s a lack of wings on Rayman, but similar to Spyro he has his own unique abilities, such as his super long punches thanks to his lack of arms!
Banjo-Kazooie (1998 – 2008)
A bear and a red bird – who could make a better crime-fighting team?! The pair are the ones given the task of stopping any of Gruntilda the Witch’s evil schemes over the course of their game franchise. While Banjo the Bear loves to explore and play his banjo, Kazooie the Breegull likes to insult people and play the kazoo. The insults often land the pair in difficulties as not everyone is a fan of being called names (really?) but when looking for games like Spyro, a Banjo-Kazooie game will fit the bill.
Luigi’s Mansion (2001)
Keeping it old school, Luigi made his second solo appearance in 2001 where he was tasked with finding his brother, Mario. Like Spyro, there are plenty of otherworldly creatures along the way, but this time in the form of ghosts. If you love Spyro, then you’ll love playing as Luigi as you vacuum up your enemies rather than head-butting them, or using one of your magic breaths. This action-adventure game can see you lose plenty of hours as you battle to become the hero of the show.
Crash Bandicoot (1996 – present)
This bandicoot runs, jumps, and spins his way through the land of the Wumpa Islands. Like Spyro, Crash is tasked with protecting his home from his main enemy, Doctor Neo Cortex, who created Crash in an experiment before he escaped. Since then, Doctor Corte has been looking for world domination, but it is your job to foil his plans. Crash is so similar to Spyro that there were crossover games released in 2004 that featured both the main characters join up to defeat their enemies.
Super Mario (1985 – present)
We all know there are a bajillion Mario games out there, so we thought we’d focus on the Super Mario franchise. In games like Spyro, it is essential to have plenty of action and adventure, while having some puzzling tasks along the way to keep the brain in check. Well, Super Mario does all of this as the player is joined by his sidekick, brother Luigi, on their mission to save Princess Peach from Bowser in the Mushroom Kingdom. If you enjoy Spyro, then picking up a copy of Super Mario will easily take you back to your childhood, even with their modern editions.
It’s been nearly seven years since we were last given a new Spyro game, but we’re sure you’ve had plenty of flying and fire-breathing practice since then. However, when looking for a new game to pick up, we hope these games like Spyro will soon become your favorites that can give you just as many hours of entertainment too.
