Crash Bandicoot was first released in 1996, but with the game making a comeback in 2017 after such a long time away, we all rushed back to our controllers to carry on from where our childhood left off. This platform game sees you playing as Crash (the eastern barred bandicoot) through the different levels as you try to defeat Doctor Neo Cortex. After rekindling our love for the game, we are now in search of games like Crash Bandicoot to give us the full nostalgic feeling.
Games Like Crash Bandicoot
When searching for games like Crash Bandicoot, there is a simple list of requirements. A game with plenty of different levels, preferably lots of things to smash or collect, and a whole ton of fun (Wumpa fruit not compulsory). Below is a list of games that fit all of these, in addition to bringing back the childhood feels that made us fall in love with the game so much in the first place.
Spyro (1998 – 2008)
It’s hard to ignore a game that had a crossover with Crash Bandicoot, so here’s the first on the list – Spyro. In this game, you play as the purple dragon himself with the help of his sidekick, a dragonfly named Sparx. Similar to Crash Bandicoot, the games feature several different worlds that are all available from the central homeworld. The goal is to make your way through the various levels where, like Crash, you eventually face the series enemy.
From its release, this game took over the world, and it’s not hard to see why. If you’re looking for games like Crash Bandicoot, then Cuphead is a perfect adult-themed alternative that has a modern twist on the levels, while incorporating plenty of nostalgic feels. The game uses animation styles from the ‘30s as you play as Cuphead, a young boy who must battle through tough levels of bosses to collect contracts before facing his final enemy. If you love Crash, you’ll love the darker storyline to Cuphead.
Super Mario 64 (1996)
Don’t worry; you won’t necessarily need to rush out and purchase an N64 to play this oldie as there are now plenty of emulators online to bring your childhood feels racing back. In this game, like Crash Bandicoot, you follow the same journey of exploring and conquering each puzzling level to progress, but playing as Mario (obvs). Just like Crash Bandicoot, you need to complete the levels before you can advance; be warned, plenty of hours can easily be lost to this Mario classic!
Ratchet and Clank (2016)
This remake was released in 2016 where it reminded gamers of the world how brilliant retro platform games could be. In this list of epic games, Ratchet and Clank stands out as you can run around the levels collecting and unlocking new weapons to help you in your quest to save the universe. Plus, the scripting is comedy gold. It is the job of Ratchet and Clank to ensure that the evil Drek can’t finish building all his evil robots to make an army, but can they stop him before it’s too late?
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (2002)
If running around as an animal looking to change the world is your thing, then look no further. Like Crash Bandicoot, here you play as an animal, only this time you’re a raccoon named Sly. Your job is to seek revenge on all the enemies that ended the lives of your family while collecting the lost pages of the Thievius Raccoonus – a book containing Sly’s family secrets on becoming the best thief in the world. If you love Crash Bandicoot, you’ll love sneaking around as Sly in this game.
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991 – present)
No matter what platform you play your games on, chances are there is a Sonic game to suit. Playing as the title character, just like Crash Bandicoot, it is your job to defeat your enemy, Doctor Eggman. Only this time you have various friends that need rescuing along the way, too. As the fastest hedgehog the world has ever seen, it’s the player’s job to fly through the levels to find your main enemy while defeating plenty of smaller enemies along the way. This fast-paced action platform game will keep you on the edge of your seat as you battle it out to the end.
Whether you’re an avid Crash fan or haven’t played the game in years, all these games like Crash Bandicoot will give you plenty of new levels to explore and conquer. Whether it’s looking for an easier sit-down and play game, or you’re searching for the ultimate challenge, all these different platform games give you a range of diversity to get you thinking.
