There’s nothing better than coming home after a long, hard day of pretending to work (but at least we pretend with style), settling down on the couch, sticking our feet up, ordering a takeaway and choosing a classic movie to watch. But which one do you choose? After all, there are so many epic movies out there. Sure, you could just ask the pizza delivery guy which one he would watch again again, but everything he chooses is just sooooo cheesy (lol, geddit?) Of course, as much as we try and disguise our decisiveness with indecisiveness, there really is no competition. Yep, for the fifth time this week, we’re going to watch Grease.
Released in 1978, Grease may seem like it was made in the dark ages, but its epic storyline, catchy musical numbers and wildly attractive main characters have continued to entertain viewers for decades. This movie follows the life of a group of students at Rydell High (AKA the dream school) during the 1950s – but it specifically follows two student in particular, Sandy Olsen (Olivia Newton-John) and Danny Zuko (John Travolta). Over the course of 110 minutes, their epic will-they-won’t-they romance will have you shouting at the TV screen, dancing around your living room, and crying along with Sandra Dee.
As much as we desperately wanted to become either a T-Bird or a Pink Lady (we weren’t fussy) we ultimately had to give up our dream and simply watch their groups in the movie instead. But it wasn’t the end of the world, as Grease offered an all-star cast that were all perfectly pruned, perfectly tuned, and perfectly poised for an impending musical number – although it was pretty clear they weren’t actually high schoolers. Nevertheless, you might be wondering what your favorite Grease stars are up to now? Well, we have the answers…
John Travolta as Danny Zuko
Oh, Danny Zuko. He was the heartthrob of the ’70s and ’80s (and the ‘50s technically, all of Rydell High loved him). Zuko was the best of both worlds. First of all, he was the whirlwind holiday romance, who loved frolicking on the beach and being all lovey-dovey. Then, he was the greaser gang T-Bird, with his leather jacket and his Elephant’s Trunk hairdo. And he even went through that Letterman sweater stage… *swoon*
John Travolta – Now
John Travolta is now one of the biggest names in the industry. He is most known for his roles in Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction, and Hairspray. Although his acting roles have declined over the past few years (remember his questionable role in that awful film, Wild Hogs?) Travolta is more of an icon nowadays. But he hasn’t run out of things to do. Travolta is a private pilot, he’s an author and member of controversial group, Scientology. We last saw him in The People v. O.J Simpson: American Crime Story, which he even helped produce.
Olivia Newton-John as Sandy Olsson
Look at her; she’s Sandra Dee! Sandy was one lucky lady, and won the affections of Danny Zuko in the movie. She was an Australian student whose family moved to America during the summer vacation, during which she met and fell victim to Zuko’s womanizing ways. When Sandy starts at Rydell High, she tries to become part of the Pink Ladies, but finds she is ‘too pure’… (cue the music) – and she turns into one sassy lady.
Olivia Newton-John – Now
Olivia Newton-John is now a legacy in the music and acting world – mostly for her role in Grease which was just so. Darn. AMAZING! But as well as being an actress, Newton-John has also made a name for herself as one of the best-selling artists of all time, winning four Grammy awards and has sold around 100 million singles worldwide. Go, Olivia! She is also a highly influential environmental and animal rights activist and has even created her own eco-friendly businesses. The last time we saw her on our screens was on Dancing with the Stars in 2015. She’s recently had some health scares, but is now in recovery. We miss you, Sandy…
Jamie Donnelly as Jan
Jan was the Pink Lady that everyone wanted to be friends with. She was goofy and quirky, but lovely to everyone – and was the one who invited Sandy to her sleepover. Jan just loved to have a good time and have a few laughs, and her “brusha brusha brusha” song is by far one of the best scenes in the movie…
Jamie Donnelly – Now
Fun fact: Jamie Donnelly starred as Jan in the Broadway production five years before she appeared in the movie! Since Grease, Donnelly has mostly focused on her Broadway career, but has still appeared on our screens. In 2015 she appeared alongside Johnny Depp in Black Mass, and has starred in TV shows like Ray Donovan and Family Affair.
Barry Pearl as Doody
Fun fact: Doody’s actual name was Anthony Del Fuego! He was called Doody because he apparently looks like Howdy Doody… Doody was the the playful, goofy T-Bird that the other guys used to make fun of – in a loving way, of course. He was the boyfriend to Frenchy, and dealt with her ever-changing hair color, calling her a “beautiful blonde pineapple.” Best of all, his weapon of choice was a yellow water gun…
Barry Pearl – Now
Barry Pearl is still acting today, and even appeared on Fox’s 2016 live-action TV special of Grease, where he played Mr. Weaver. It seems he just couldn’t get enough of the Grease action! Throughout his acting career, Pearl has had a steady stream of acting jobs, but is still known for his role as Doody. He’ll always be our Doody…
Dinah Manoff as Marty Maraschino
Ever wondered why you never saw Marty Maraschino singing or dancing? Because Dinah Manoff couldn’t do either, so they kept her out of the musical numbers. Marty was the kid at high school who tried to be a lot more sophisticated than she was, and often seemed uninterested in everyone else’s business. Even though she was in a relationship with Sonny, she often attracted the attention of other men.
Dinah Manoff – Now
Dinah Manoff is mostly recognized for her role in Grease, as well as her appearance in Soap, and I Ought To Be In Pictures. Although she has had a successful acting career, she has yet to star in anything since 2013, but is still known as a huge figure within the world of Hollywood because of her character, Marty.
Kelly Ward as Putzie
You’re a sick man, Putz. Putzie is another member of the T-Birds and is the boyfriend to Jan. His character is most known for his argument with Jan at the Frosty Palace, but then it all calms down when she asks him back to her place to try some of her mother’s pie. Because pie makes everything better. He was also the one who hit Kenickie over the head, just before he was about to ride Thunder Road, meaning he couldn’t drive.
Kelly Ward – Now
Since his time on Grease, Ward has become a huge figure within the world of the Walt Disney Corporation. He has since gone on to become a voice director and has worked on the likes of Jake and the Never Land Pirates and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Who knew Putzie would amount to so much?
Susan Buckner as Patty Simcox
Patty Simcox wasn’t your typical head cheerleader. She was beautiful, intelligent, and the biggest goody-two-shoes there was. But she was often made fun of by the T-Birds and The Pink Ladies because of her do-gooding ways, and was pranked many times throughout the movie – she had a rat thrown in her bag, her dress pulled up at the dance, and an apple put on her seat just as she was about to sit down. Poor Patty…
Susan Buckner – Now
How amazing does she look now?! Before her time on Grease, Buckner was crowned Miss Washington 1971 and was a finalist in the Miss America contest! Her acting career has only really included her role in Grease, but she has starred in small roles in TV shows like Starsky and Hutch and 1 vs. 100.
Eddie Deezen as Eugene Felnic
Hey, Eugene! Eugene was the ultimate geek in high school, and was always teased by Sonny, Putzie, and Doody, and he is almost entirely ignored by Danny and Kenickie, who see him as inferior. But Eugene just wanted to be liked, and pretty much did his own thing. And we respect that. He does get an unwelcome pie to the face at the end of the movie, though…
Eddie Deezen – Now
After his role in Grease, Eddie Deezen went to reprise his role in the less popular sequel, Grease 2. Despite this movie flop, Deezen has had an extremely successful career. He has starred in Teenage Exorcist, Beverly Hills Vamp, and Midnight Madness, and has even lent his iconic voice to characters within Dexter’s Laboratory, Kim Possible, and The Polar Express.
Michael Tucci as Sonny
Sonny was the class clown. He was the final member of the T-Birds and was your typical joker, that always had to have the last word. He was a cocky Italian high schooler that doesn’t take nothin’ from nobody! Sonny was the boyfriend of Marty Maraschino, and spiked the punch at the school dance…
Michael Tucci – Now
Although Michael Tucci is mostly known for his role in Grease (and still looks like Sonny!), he has since made a name for himself outside of the franchise. After his role, he spent most of his time touring around with an acting troupe and performing on stage. At the moment, he is passing his talent onto others, and teaching the Introduction to Fine Arts and Theater Arts class at a high school in California.
Didi Conn as Frenchy
Frenchy is one of the most bubbly and feisty members of the Pink Ladies. She dropped out of high school to focus her attention on attending Beauty School, but dropped out of that too… landing her her own song, “Beauty School Dropout.” Frenchy is in a relationship with Doody and was the kind of person who was nice to everyone, no matter their social standing. We loved Frenchy.
Didi Conn – Now
She is still the spitting image of Frenchy… just without the pink hair. Didi Conn went on to reprise her role in Grease 2 and even had a cameo in the 2016 live-action Grease TV special. Conn has since gone on to star in small roles on stage and screen, and also spends a lot of her time advocating autism awareness after her son was diagnosed.
Lorenzo Lamas as Tom Chisum
Tom Chisum was only a minor character on Grease, but made quite a statement and gained a few fans after the movie was released. Chisum was the ultimate jock, and was a footballer for the high school team. He starts off dating Sandy (who uses him to make Danny jealous – and it works) and he then goes on to date Patty Simcox.
Lorenzo Lamas – Then
Lorenzo Lamas has just gone from strength to strength after his time on Grease. He has since starred in movies like Raptor Island, 30,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!, as well as TV shows like Lucha Underground, Celebrity Apprentice, The Bold and Beautiful and Fantasy Island.
Stockard Channing as Rizzo
Betty Alexander Rizzo was mostly known by her nickname and surname, Rizzo. She was the ruthless leader of the Pink Ladies, and was one of the most sarcastic people we’ve ever watched… and we absolutely loved it. Rizzo has a bit of a reputation throughout the movie; she smokes, drinks and basically doesn’t give a darn about what other people think about her. She’s also the lucky girlfriend of Kenickie… and yes, she did get those hickeys.
